We are delighted to announce that 50008 will be running at the Weardale Railway on Sunday 29/12. Three return trips are planned, running top and tail with one, possibly two of the Class 31s based at the railway. All three return journeys run through to Bishop Auckland West, for connections with Northern services. Timetable and booking details can be found using this link.
Upcoming 2025 Charter Plans
Plans are reaching conclusion for our 2025 charter programme, and here are a few early dates for your diary. Where not already known, the various promoters will advertise in the coming months.
Inter City 125 - 2025 Plan
Working with our friends at the 125 Group, the following are planned with their wonderful HST formation…..
16/08 – The Weardale Railway to Edinburgh
Please keep an eye on the Bishop Trains website for more details of this operation....... https://www.ba-rail.co.uk/special-trains
30/08 – The Pennines to the Norfolk Coast
We are delighted to advise that for our friends at Retro Railtours, a visit to Great Yarmouth. The train should traverse both the Acle and Berney Arms routes.
50008 ‘Thunderer’ - 2025 Plan
Utilising a short set of MK1s, our very own 50008 will be in use in 2025. Planning is advanced for a small number of operations, all featuring rare or virgin territory for the Class, and all featuring a second loco for support supplied by likeminded operators and owners.
Set aside 23rd to 27th of May 2025 inclusive, for five days of back-to-back Class 50 haulage, featuring a feast of new track for the Class, and some visits to former stamping grounds.
Also on the do list are Heysham, Southend, and Sheerness. You’ll need to pencil in 23 and 25 August, and 26 through to 28th September.
Our 50 will also visit a diesel gala or two. More details on those later.
All the usual caveats apply!
Retro High Speed Scot
Hanson & Hall will be operating Retro Railtours High Speed Scot to Edinburgh on Saturday 24th August.
A first for Retro Railtours, we will whizzing you along at 125 miles per hour in retro comfort on our specially chartered Intercity 125 train.
The special train will depart from Crewe and stations in Cheshire and Greater Manchester, before travelling over the Pennines to Huddersfield and Wakefield. The train will then cruise along the East Coast Mainline towards Edinburgh Waverley. Once the stomping ground of the legendary Intercity 125 train, these British Rail icons have been consigned to the history books on mainline services, so this is a very rare opportunity to sample one at high speed.
The Retro High Speed Scot will arrive into the Scottish capital at around midday, giving you ample time to sample the sights and sounds of Edinburgh. The Edinburgh Festival and Fringe will be in full swing, so you'll be sure to find bustling streets and live performances. The train will depart back towards Yorkshire and Cheshire stations in the late afternoon, giving you just over four hours to explore Edinburgh.

The Jolly Vacman with 50008
Amongst the enthusiast community, Skegness will always be famous for Saturday only holidaymaker excursions, often featuring pairs of Class 20s. The Jolly Fisherman of course is a poster created by artist John Hassall in 1908 after he had been commissioned by the Great Northern Railway. It is regarded as one of the most famous holiday advertisements of all time and is believed to have influenced the success of Skegness as a holiday destination. Hassall was paid 12 Guineas for his work, and the original painting hangs in the town hall at Skegness. There is a choice of a short photo stop at Skegness in the evening, or an extending break from mid-morning.
